LUBIAM: Company Info

In 1898, at the age of sixteen, Luigi Bianchi set off to Turin to study tailoring. His father, Paride, and grandfather, Giuliano, were door-to-door tailors and barbers, so Luigi felt it was his duty to continue the family tradition. In 1911, he founded his tailoring shop in Mantua, selling clothes made from the finest materials for both men and women. Over the years, Luigi’s reputation attracted the legendary Duke of Windsor to the shop, and he ordered an entire wardrobe of new suits and accessories.
In the 1920s, the women's line was abandoned and hand made custom clothing was already being produced by hundreds of employees. In 1938, Luigi's eldest son Edgardo founded a factory to shorten the delivery times and to expand the business. Tailored clothes were abandoned, and made-to-measure clothes took their place, partly made by hand. The factory was the first in Italy to have a production line. A year later, the old name was changed to the acronym LUBIAM, which stood for LUigi BIAnchi Mantova. The name of the town was included to emphasize the company's ties to the region. In the 1950s, an economic upheaval began in Mantua, and brought thousands of jobs, thanks in large part to the LUBIAM factory. Large advertising campaigns brought the company additional visibility.
Aggressive marketing continued into the' 60s and LUBIAM's L-logo was everywhere. Growth was assured, new factories were established, and eventually the company was accepted into department stores such as Harrods and F.One. Today, LUBIAM is one of the few traditional Italian factories still in the hands of the founding family. Currently, the fourth generation is at the needles. All suits are finished by hand, respecting Italian tailoring tradition.
