Hackett

In 1979, Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings set up a second-hand men's clothing boutique on Portobello Road. Jeremy had left school at 17 and started working in a local menswear shop. From there, he continued his journey to Savile Row to train as a tailor; even then he dreamed of opening his own shop. In 1983, Hackett and Lloyd-Jennings created a second-hand store Hackett. Jeremy's interest in the young Fogey characters and the Sloane Ranger Handbook shed some light on where his influences came from.

Two years later, the company realised that the demand for quality would always be greater than the quantity of second-hand clothing available. They began making their own clothing to complement the second-hand range. The collection featured clean and classic clothing, but with bold use of colour and pattern. Success was guaranteed, as the sons of the men who shopped on Savile Row had been looking for something exactly like Hackett. The popularity was so great that in 1986 Hackett decided to open a shirt and tie shop, a tailor's shop, a formalwear boutique, a hygiene and accessories shop and a sportswear store in addition to the original shop - all within a hundred yards of each other. The area became known to London taxi drivers as Hackett's Crossing.

In 1987, the company began sponsoring polo and the Hackett polo shirt was born. A couple of years later, when interest from foreign Anglophiles and Spanish customers had been piqued, Hackett set up shop in Madrid. In 1992, the main store opened on Sloane Street. After receiving constant requests for clothes that boys could wear just like their fathers, Hackett jumped into action. Three years later, the boys' clothing line was born, which really set the company apart from the other Jermyn Street players. In 1997, the company began sponsoring the England rugby team. Before the turn of the millennium, Hackett's signature tweed was released, a red check on a green base.
